Book Review: Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix *** out of *****

The second novel by Grady Hendrix is a fun if slight horror-comedy novel about a haunted furniture store.

The book features likable characters, and Hendrix has a talent for dialogue and smooth prose. But the confined setting - the whole book takes place during one night inside the store - and lack of twists, make things feel repetitive, and the villain is pretty forgettable. Also, the anti-big business message comes off as heavy-handed and sophomoric.

An entertaining if forgettable book, which feels like a below average book by a talented writer. But it might please fans of eighties horror, as it is obviously intended as a pastiche of the "haunted store/mall" subgenre that was so popular in that decade.
